Our newest family member

So although we're still sad about the loss of Thelonius, we HAVE moved on. Yesterday Ryan and I made our first major purchase as a married couple. We bought this 2005 Honda Pilot and we got a GREAT deal on it! It had been rear-ended and so it has a rebuilt title, but the damage was so minimal and was completely fixed. It looks and runs like new (yes, we took it to a mechanic first who said that it's great) and it only has 32,000 miles. So we are now officially SUV owners...which does mean no props from our current president, but uh...ask me if I really care. Until the "Czar of Transportation" (aka the "Czar of try-to-force-everyone-to-drive-a-smartcar-or-a-hybrid) decrees SUV's illegal, this is what we'll be driving. And guess what? I'll be using it to go through the drive-thru at Wendy's too. Until drive-thru's are banned as well, that is, at which time I'll probably form a support group called MIDASDT - Mothers in Defense and Support of Drive Thru's. If you would like to join, just let me know. ;)

On another note, Happy 4th of July! I love this country. I love that I was born here and that I have all the rights that I have. I'm thankful every day for the freedoms that I enjoy here and I pray that we'll continue to be able to enjoy those freedoms always. Of course, as you might surmise from the sarcasm above, I do feel slightly nervous about our future. I find myself wondering all the time what the world will be like when my children are teenagers and adults. I wonder if they'll know the United States that we know now, or if it will be a completely different place. I hope they'll continue to be able to enjoy little things, like having a barbecue and going to see the fireworks on the Fourth of July. And I hope they will always have many reasons to be proud of their country. We live in a wonderful place and I hope to never take it for granted!

Can I join your drive-thru support group even if I'm not a mom. I think they are one our best investions.

As far as the future goes, I'm hoping the Millenium will be here soon. I, too, am nervous about the future.

Awesome! We actually love rebuilt-title cars and have bought 2 of them so far (and will continue to do so). They are just fine, but yet so much cheaper with low miles!

For the record, the Pilot is one of the most fuel-efficient SUV's on the road. Consumer reports says it gets 25 MPG highway, and that's where we do most of our driving. Also, while I know my love enjoys the best of Republican fear-mongering, drive-throughs aren't going anywhere. It takes more gas (or electricity or natural gas or hydrogen or whatever) to turn a car on and off than it does to sit in the drive-through.
On that note, the restaurants did what the car industry didn't--innovate. People didn't have time to sit down and eat in the restaurant, so the restaurants changed. They didn't beg the government for money. They changed! American car-makers suck. They don't deserve a penny of my taxes (not that I have many pennies to give) to fix problems they created. My Pilot gets better gas mileage than all similar American SUV's.

I love you guys! I'm so happy for your new "baby." You'll have to let me know what the name is. As for smart cars....if you ever start feeling like you should have helped the environment or something like that by getting a smart car use your SUV and play "bumper cars" with one. I think you'll find you made the better purchase.
